Beached Whales and Priests of God: Kepler and the Cometary Spirit of 1607.Patrick J. Boner - 2012 - Early Science and Medicine 17 (6):589-603.
This essay examines the cometary theory of Johannes Kepler and his claim that an “ethereal spirit” could lead a comet to appear at a providential place and time. In his account of the comet of 1607, Kepler suggested that a spirit served as a navigational principle that steered the comet on a particular course. I argue that this principle was an extension of Kepler’s celestial physics and part of his larger conception of causes at work in the heavens. I also (...)

Twitter Presence and Experience Improve Corporate Social Responsibility Outcomes.Siva K. Balasubramanian, Yiwei Fang & Zihao Yang - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 173 (4):737-757.
We investigate the role of social-media-triggered public pressure on corporate social responsibility that includes expectations of transparency and accountability on the firm’s part, and participative/evaluative inputs on the public’s part. Using the date when S&P 500 firms established corporate Twitter accounts, we investigate the impact of corporate social media exposure on CSR outcomes. Results from baseline regressions indicate that firms with Twitter accounts significantly outperform industry peers in CSR rating, after controlling for firm and industry characteristics. To test potential reverse (...)

The Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet are a rich source of learning about human psychology and the personality types, patterns and traits. This study attempted to understand whether personality types and patterns can be understood through Islamic knowledge. For this purpose, the study examined the personality traits as laid down in the Qur’an and later disseminated though the hadiths. A qualitative research design was adopted for this study, combining philosophical and phenomenological approaches, where the former captured the (...)

Ordinary Cosmopolitanisms: Strategies for Bridging Racial Boundaries among Working-Class Men.Michèle Lamont & Sada Aksartova - 2002 - Theory, Culture and Society 19 (4):1-25.
In contrast to most literature on cosmopolitanism, which focuses on its elite forms, this article analyzes how ordinary people bridge racial boundaries in everyday life. It is based on interviews with 150 non-college-educated white and black workers in the United States and white and North African workers in France. The comparison of the four groups shows how differences in cultural repertoires across national context and structural location shape distinct anti-racist rhetorics. Market-based arguments are salient among American workers, while arguments based (...)

Additional Food Supplements as a Tool for Biological Conservation of Biosystems in the Presence of Inhibitory Effect of the Prey.D. K. K. Vamsi, Deva Siva Sai Murari Kanumoori & Bishal Chhetri - 2019 - Acta Biotheoretica 68 (3):321-355.
Provision of additional food supplements for the purpose of biological conservation has been widely researched both theoretically and experimentally. The study of these biosystems is usually done using predator–prey models. In this paper, we consider an additional food provided predator–prey system in the presence of the inhibitory effect of the prey. This model is analyzed in the control parameter space using the control parameters, quality and quantity of additional food. The findings suggest that with appropriate choice of additional food to (...)
